Every year, the third Monday of January is dubbed “Blue Monday”. This term originates in 2004 – Psychologist Cliff Arnall was asked by travel firm “Sky Travel” to create a formula for the “January blues” and to determine the best day to book a holiday during this time. His theory is based on the idea that it’s at this time of year when we’re dealing with colder weather, darker days/nights, are tightening the purse strings post-Christmas, and haven’t stuck to any new year’s resolutions that we had committed to.

Whether “Blue Monday” is just a PR stunt or not, there may be some truth to January being the saddest month of the year. Some people suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) through the winter months in general – see here for our 2017 Wellness At Work blog piece for more information on what this is and how to tackle it.

What we can take from “Blue Monday”, is that it presents an opportunity for us to reinforce the importance of looking after our mental health and wellbeing all year round. Wellness at Work is so important to us at Blythe Valley Park and is ingrained into our Park ethos – and our commitment to this is more important than ever.
